Der forskes i sjældne hormon- og stofskiftesygdomme hos børn med fokus på at forbedre diagnostik, behandling og patientforløb. Gennem nationale og internationale samarbejder bidrager vi til udvikling af ny viden til gavn for børn og unge.

Forskningsområder
H.C. Andersen Børne- og Ungeafdeling er jf. Sundhedsstyrelsen landscenter for kompliceret hypoglykæmi. Centeret er et multidisciplinært OUH-center, der involverer afdelingerne for børne- & ungesygdomme, genetik, anæstesi, nuklearmedicin og røntgen, kirurgi og patologi. Vi er eksperter i diagnostik, medicinsk og kirurgisk behandling af sygdommene, og vi forsker med andre nationale og internationale forskere og patientorganisationer. Flere ph.d.-projekter, prægraduater og kandidatspecialer gennemføres og er projekteret inden for dette område.
På nuværende tidspunkt forløber blandt andet et ph.d.-projekt omhandlende forbedring af diagnostikken af ketotisk hypoglykæmi (KH) hos børn. Målet er at identificere hyppigheden og typerne af KH, herunder fysiologiske og patologiske undertyper. Denne viden skal bruges til at danne et beslutningsværktøj for hvem, der skal udredes samt understøtte skræddersyet opfølgning og behandling til børn med tilstanden.
Blandt øvrige projekter forsker vi i kongenit multipel hypofyseinsufficiens, genetik ved lav højde og unge med type 1 diabetes.
Nationalt og internationalt samarbejde
Vi har et nationalt og internationalt multidisciplinært Center for Hyperinsulinisme omfattende genetik, DOPA-PET/CT, patologi og konservativ og kirurgisk behandling med tilhørende forskningsaktiviteter. Centret varetager også klinik og forskning i insulinomer og ketotisk hypoglykæmi. Desuden deltager afdelingen løbende i nationale projekter ledet fra andre afdelinger.
Børneafdelingen er i samarbejde med bl.a. Klinisk Genetisk og Afd. M. optaget i European Ressource Network (ERN) for sjældne endokrinologiske sygdomme (ERN Endo) og sjældne knoglesygdomme (ERN Bond). Aktiviteten i ERN vil understøtte både klinikken og forskningen inden for disse områder.
Center for Hyperinsulinsme og lavt blodsukker på OUH blev i juli 2024 udnævnt til Center of Excellence indenfor Hyperinsulinisme. Vores specialviden inden for hyperinsulinisme og hypoglykæmi er internationalt velkendt og derfor behandler vi også patienter med for lavt blodsukker fra andre lande. Vi har allerede haft besøg af over 100 internationale patienter i center for hyperinsulinisme og lavt blodsukker.

Research Areas
The Hans Christian Andersen Children’s Hospital at Odense University Hospital is designated by the Danish Health Authority as the national referral centre for complex hypoglycaemia in children. The centre is a multidisciplinary unit at Odense University Hospital, bringing together specialists in paediatrics, clinical genetics, anaesthesiology, nuclear medicine and radiology, surgery, and pathology.
We have specialised expertise in the diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of these conditions and collaborate with national and international researchers and patient organisations. Several PhD projects, undergraduate research projects, and master’s theses are currently being conducted or planned within this field.
One ongoing PhD project focuses on improving the diagnosis of ketotic hypoglycaemia (KH) in children. The aim is to determine how common KH is and to identify its different forms, including physiological and pathological subtypes. This knowledge will contribute to the development of a clinical decision tool to help identify which children require further assessment and to support personalised follow-up and treatment.
Other research areas include congenital multiple pituitary hormone deficiencies, the genetic causes of short stature, and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
National and International Collaboration
Our multidisciplinary Centre for Hyperinsulinism brings together expertise in genetics, DOPA PET/CT imaging, pathology, and both medical and surgical treatment. The centre provides clinical care and conducts research on hyperinsulinism, insulinomas, and ketotic hypoglycaemia. We also participate in national research projects led by other departments and hospitals.
Together with the Department of Clinical Genetics and other departments at Odense University Hospital, the Children’s Hospital is a member of the European Reference Networks (ERNs) for rare endocrine disorders (Endo-ERN) and rare bone diseases (ERN BOND). Participation in these networks supports the development of both clinical care and research in these specialised areas.
In July 2024, the OUH Centre for Hyperinsulinism and Hypoglycaemia was designated a Centre of Excellence for Hyperinsulinism. Our expertise in hyperinsulinism and hypoglycaemia is internationally recognised, and we provide specialised care for children with hypoglycaemia from other countries. To date, the centre has welcomed more than 100 international patients.
